Modern western folk understandings of what constitutes “art” often give primal importance to notions of creativity, individuality and originality. However, many artistic traditions are based on skills and conventions that have been built up and faithfully transmitted over many generations. In this talk, I will discuss how the deep history of art can be investigated using biological methods of phylogenetic analysis, and show how these techniques can be used to reconstruct the origins and evolution of craft styles and folktales.
